Vermont Writing Collaborative

The Vermont Writing Collaborative was founded in 2007 by a group of classroom teachers, K-12. Using backward design and a content-based, integrated approach, its mission is to help all students write effectively. The Vermont Writing Collaborative sponsors professional development for teachers around New England and beyond, notably in the form of a weeklong summer institute in Vermont as well as other courses and workshops around the country. Recently, the Collaborative teamed with Student Achievement Partners to produce a resource of Common Core writing samples, In Common, for teachers at all grade levels.

“What the Vermont Writing Collaborative has done is provide a fresh, comprehensive, yet practical strategy for making good writing…more attainable – a lesson the young writer who struggles to write well needs to learn as quickly as possible.” Grant Wiggins

“I have seen Writing for Understanding instruction in action and fully endorse it. I hope more teachers can get access to this approach for helping all kids write effectively.” Armando Vilaseca, Vermont Commissioner of Education
